String theory and M-theory: These are the most prominent theories that require extra dimensions.  String theory proposes that the fundamental constituents of the universe are not point-like particles  but tiny, vibrating one-dimensional “strings”. For its mathematical consistency, it requires 10 spacetime dimensions, while the unifying framework, M-theory, requires 11 dimensions. The extra dimensions are thought to be curled up and incredibly small, or we may be confined to a 4D “brane” floating in a higher-dimensional space.

Kaluza–Klein theory: This is an earlier theory from the 1920s that first explored the idea of using an extra dimension to unify gravity and electromagnetism. It suggests a fifth dimension that is curled up and too small to detect.

Braneworld models: Building on string theory, these models propose that our entire universe exists on a 4D “brane” that is embedded in a larger, higher-dimensional space. In some of these models, gravity is allowed to “leak” into the extra dimensions, which could explain why it appears so much weaker than other fundamental forces.
