When white people riot

– When black people protest against police violence in Ferguson, Missouri, they’re thought of as a “mob.”

But when white people got up in arms at the Pumpkin Festival in Keene, New Hampshire, a few weeks ago — for apparently no reason whatsoever — they were merely accused of “disruptive behavior.”

The two situations — protests in Ferguson and drunken violence in Keene — are not equivalent. However, it’s revealing how the two groups are perceived differently by society and and the media. How is it that the bad behavior of some black people is used to condemn an entire community, while the bad behavior of some white kids is excused and explained away? Maybe this is why residents of Ferguson protested in the first place.

Teen Girl Fatally Shot by Cops at Texas Police Station

A knife is certainly not nothing. But it’s also not a gun.
But why can’t three cops, in the middle of their own lobby,
subdue a knife-wielding teen girl without using lethal force.
Coignard was shot four times, and three police officers have
been placed on administrative leave.

The memo claims that any unnamed “high-level official,” not necessarily the president, has the lawful power to decide when to suspend constitutional protections guaranteed to all persons and kill them without any due process whatsoever. This is the power claimed by kings and tyrants… Now, under Obama, this has become U. S. policy.

…I asked Jeff about his future. He told me calmly that all of his appeal options have been exhausted. Unless the Governor of Missouri grants Jeff clemency and sets him free, he will likely die there.

Putting teachers back in charge…

instead of starving our schools of critical funding and pushing market-based, test-driven policies that ultimately fail our kids, we should be relying on evidence and input from those closest to the classroom to find solutions that work to reclaim the promise of public education. Those closest to the classrooms are teachers. One of the most effective measures we can take is to put teachers back in charge.
